Well, we made it! 7 days of open competitions concluded today with the Axe Edge Trophy, a 4BBB gents competition that has always been the concluding event in our Festival of Golf, Open Week.
There were concerns as to whether we would get through it with a horrendous forecast suggesting thunderstorms and relentless rain. But as is often the case at 330m (1,000ft) above sea level, the weather is very difficult to predict. It was wet; boy was it wet at times. But the course held up superbly enabling all 204 participants to complete their rounds.
Despite the weather, scoring from the off was good with 41 points being posted by 3 of the early teams. But it was the pair Critchlow and Stubbs who broke ranks and sat proudly in the clubhouse with a stellar 42 points. “It may be wet out there but the course is in great condition and the greens are both receptive and slick” remarked one of the lads from Newcastle-under-Lyme.
The good scoring continued with 44 points from Walker & Clark and soon after the same score from Heapy and Kettles. Last year’s winners Dean and Whalley must have felt good carding 43 points but this year that was just not enough.
Into the afternoon rounds and the weather really was shocking and this was reflected in the scoring. But locals are used to these conditions and so it was no surprise to see Forder and Barton top the leaderboard on a card playoff. Bolton and Bloor came close but ultimately came up a shot short as did Featherstone and Sutton and Ponsonby and Wildgoose. After a nervous hour and a half the new Axe Edge Champions were crowned.
