The Captains Away event is one of the highlights of the Captain’s year and this year was held at Breadsall Priory 9 and 10 August with 35 Cavendish members. However there was one main departure from convention …
The Covid pandemic meant that last year’s Captain Mike Higgins could not enjoy an away event of his own, so Captain Pat suggested they share his event.
Each Captain lead a distinguished team:
‘The Peaky Blinders’ – reflecting Pat’s Birmingham heritage
‘The Bryson Shambolics’ – enough said about them the better!
On arrival each player was allocated a team and presented with either a black Peaky Blinder cap (the best waterproof model Mr Asif from Bolton market could supply!) or a cream Bryson trade mark cap (defo NOT waterproof!)
Despite this thoughtful gesture, the weather on the first day (Sunday) was nothing short of horrendous with torrential rain – generously interspersed with bouts of monsoon!!
Neither the black nor cream hats in the event could keep the water from soaking every player on the Morlands course.
The informal evening dinner and presentation was light hearted and good spirited.
Mr Captain managed to secure a bulk supply of ‘Shelby’ branded Peaky Blinder ale gift sets (possibly courtesy of Bolton market once again) that were liberally distributed as prizes. Josh Johnson and Les Gould won a single gift set each for coming first with the second placed pair getting TWO sets each!!
On a positive note, the hotel hairdryers were very effective in drying the golf gear overnight in case we needed to re-face the elements!
To everyone’s relief Monday was sunny (and dry) which certainly enhanced the experience of the parkland Priory course.
Who knows who won what individual prizes … who even cares … what we do know is that the Peaky Blinders team beat the Bryson Shambolics and everyone left with a smile on their face!
