Last year the two seniors events got the best weather of the week. This year they paid for it as bands of rain, showers and the edge of a storm passed through to ensure that nobody escaped a dousing.
You had to feel for the early starters; it was relentless and therefore no surprise to see that scoring was difficult. “I’m wet in places I didn’t even know I had places” remarked one good humoured chap from Chester.
The first score of note came from the Mickleover group with 43 points for Hanks & Forest narrowly beating their fellow club members Grace & Usher who scored a creditable 40 points. “It’s tough out there – waterproofs on, waterproofs off; just holding on to a club at times was a genuine achievement” was how the round was summed up by our friends from Rotherham. For many hours it seemed that these two would take the top prizes.
By early afternoon the conditions had improved with longer spells between the showers. Local boys Lomas and Bloor are used to the conditions at Cavendish and somehow, despite at times struggling to hold a club they returned a winning score of 47 points. Match & Handicap will be taking a close look at the card!
“The course is stunning; to be able to present it at this quality in these conditions is remarkable and testament to your greenkeeping team. The greens are not the quickest but they are so true and the fairways and approaches are delightful to play from. I just wish we’d had a little more sun so we could really enjoy it” said the team from Newcastle, “and we’re off to book for next year”
