2021 Cavendish Open Week Festival got off to an absolute flyer yesterday with the Gents AMAM.
In less than ideal conditions – misty, drizzle and just a little chilly, the scoring from the start was excellent with the early teams putting down markers on the newly refurbished opening holes.
“We’ve been coming here for 5 years now and the course has never looked better. It’s one of the most challenging places we visit regularly and it’s worth every minute of the 2 hour drive to get here” was how the lads from Lincoln described it.
By mid-morning the weather had improved and so had the standard of golf. Not everybody was scoring well – “We come here year after year to beat ourselves up! But it is magnificent; absolutely stunning – we love it” was how the team from Worcester summed it up.
It was clear that teams had travelled from some distance to be here: Crewe, Warrington, Grimsby, Nottingham, Birmingham, Dorset and Leicestershire to name just a few and the most used adjective amongst them was “stunning!”
3 Holes-in-One!
It was certainly a day to remember for Bob Chapple (Belton Park GC), Martin Holbourn (Antrobus GC) and John Carroll (Newcastle-under-Lyme GC) who all had aces to celebrate on the 9th, 13th and 17th respectively. I’m sure it has happened before somewhere but 3 holes-in-one in a single competition is remarkable. We’ll have to toughen up the pins!
And the winners are …
When it was all over, it was the team from Stoke Rochford Golf Club who had prevailed with a stellar back 9 of 47 points – Andrew Green, Gavin Green, Joshua Green and Michael Green won with 87 points on a back-nine countback. Congratulations to them and to all our prize winners.
