On a very pleasant Monday morning we welcomed over 180 seniors to compete in Day 2 of Open week, a senior AMAM.
With the gentlest of breezes the conditions looked perfect from the off for some good scoring and the field was led by Tomczak, Owen, Burgess and Oakes – regular visitors from Leek Birchall and Barlaston who were steady and compiled a very creditable 80 points.
“We absolutely love this place! A real challenge but in a good way. I look forward to it every year and the 2 hours (plus) drive to get here (from Corby) is well worth it. Once again it is presented superbly – hats off to your greenkeepers” And that despite our friends from South Leicestershire and Northamptonshire struggling on the first few holes.
The 8.30 team of locals; Forder, Taylor, Johnson and Lomas were the first to really get going setting an impressive 91 for the rest of the field to chase. Until the 11th hour it seemed they had done enough but it was the final group of Webster, Bolton, Hall (all Cavendish) and Baker (Wortley) with a superb 92 who took the honours.
Once again teams had come from far and wide to compete. From Knaresborough in North Yorkshire, Bedfordshire, Northants, Birmingham and Worcester the word is certainly out that Cavendish is worth the journey and it was great to see that more than 60% of the prizes went to visitors. No small achievement given how tricky our greens can be to read.
“It’s such a wonderful place. Some of the best yet trickiest greens we’ve played. We come year after year and we’re never disappointed. It’s a bonus when the weather is this good” was how the lads from Wolverhampton saw it.
