‘Captain’s Day’ is a special day in the Captain’s Year. It involves lots of organisation by the captain (and not a little cost) and it’s the only competition in which the captain does not participate – so he gets all the hassle and none of the pleasure!

Despite the odd marquee to either shade everyone from the sun OR keep them dry, the day can be ruined by poor weather and so in the lead-up to the big day, every captain prays for sunshine. The ‘weather gods’ look favourably on some, but not on others ,,, even our own ‘Weather Eagle’ couldn’t have predicted the deluge dealt out to 2016 Captain Brian Doig … on multiple dates!!

Nobody wants to be know as the “Raining Captain!!” – mind you Brian still disputes that accolade!

So to Captain Campbell’s Day … well it was nothing like the wall-to-wall sunshine of the previous day!

For the first 3 hours the rain just wouldn’t stop and many who went out early posted NRs, this is despite the best efforts of Mr Captain’s wife Chris, who provided plenty of flap jacks and fruit to sustain the brave members who fought their way around the course for a refill and half way house at the 11th tee.
The spread included magnificent sandwiches and fabulous cakes all specially prepared for the day by Sue Crisp and the ladies section .. and all served with loads of beer!

Gradually the weather did improve and Mr Captain felt he was living out Alan Sherman’s ‘Hello Mudder, Hello Father’ comedy song!

Despite the earlier bad weather, the ‘Raining Captain’ baton did not pass to Pat who laughed his way through the day and in the event, some very good scores were posted.

Congratulations to all the winners but particularly to Aaron Bothamley.
Aaron achieved the distinction of the winning the “nearest the hole” inaugural challenge on the Piccolo Course with a HOLE IN ONE!
The presentation will take place on Saturday 10th July at 7.00pm
