In a change to the normal schedule, this year we ran a singles stableford open competition with both gents and ladies divisions.
Cavendish welcomed 88 competitors from all over the UK and the weather held out with only a light shower. All competitors were extremely happy with the course condition with many finding the greens a challenge!
As dark clouds skirted the course and thunder was heard rumbling not that far away, Cavendish received just a short shower or two making conditions ideal for a good score.
“This is a gem of a course and a pleasure to play when conditions are like this” was the opinion of one of our Yorkshire visitors. “I’ve probably left far too many putts out there to win a prize but coming from a club with flattish greens they take some getting used to. I don’t think I’ve ever had so many 3 stabs!”
The first group out set the pace with Brian Dewick returning an excellent 39 points to be the clubhouse leader only to be beaten on the back 9 by 2 former captains of Cavendish, Neil Flynn and Nod Forder with Neil edging it on the countback.
Favourable pin positions on the par 3s resulted in the 5th hole-in-one of the week, this time for our Chairman of Match & Handicap, Jeff Haddon. A superb shot on the 4th that landed 2 feet behind the pin and spun back into the centre of the hole. A Hugo Boss hole-in-one club watch is on its way!
Great performances by Ben Whetstone (38) from Atherstone GC, Warwickshire and Jonathan Wilson (also 38) from Mapperley GC, Nottingham were not quite enough to stop our eventual winner, Congleton boy, Alister Dean who teed off last and returned a superb 41 points.
In the ladies division it was equally tight but Kate Stewart from Glossop GC held off all-comers to take top spot with an excellent 31 points.
