Day 2 of Open Week at Cavendish Golf Club and today we welcomed seniors from far and wide as we continued our festival of golf.
Those who played in previous years were well equipped, but many first-timers must have looked out of the window at home and seen sunshine and blue sky and totally underestimated what it’s like at a 1,000 feet above sea level. Fortunately, Rachel and Penny were on hand in the shop to handle the rush for pullovers, sweatshirts and long-sleeved jackets as the temperature barely inched into double figures for the start.
Once again it was blustery and almost autumnal as the early starters endured some squally showers and leaden skies. Thankfully, by late morning, the clouds broke and whilst the mercury may not have been bubbling, it was certainly on the rise. The early pace was set by our very own Captain, Mike Higgins with his team of Mark Chuwen, Bev Wilson and Andrew Chadwick from New Mills Golf Club who returned a very creditable 79 points. They were briefly threatened by the team from Horsley Lodge Golf Club of David Wagstaff, P Bailey, G Proudler and P Rooney but held on by a card play-off.
And so it remained, as the afternoon wore on, but we knew there were some strong teams later in the day. It was just before 7pm when the Cavendish team of Malcolm Forder, Phil Major, Kevin Bloor and Paul Crisp returned with an astonishing 85 points, closely followed by our friends from Matlock; John Boden, Nigel Rogers (The) Mick Wain and Chris Gregory with 81 points. The warm afternoon sun and the gentler breeze, greatly benefitting the later starters.
The speed and slopes of the Cavendish Greens had once again taken their toll as rounds with as many as 49 putts dissected over a pint of Wainwrights. “I punish myself every year but I just can’t stop coming back for more” said one visitor from the Midlands.
