‘Peaky Blinders’ Play Morecambe

MacKenzie golf & ultra warm welcome

Chris, Bridget and the two ‘Peaky Blinders’ Pat & Mike visited Morecambe GC, north of Lancaster, to play this lovely course designed  by Alister MacKenzie, with stunning views over Morecambe Bay and the Lake District Mountains as a back drop. Aparently the sunsets are just spectacular from the panoramic windows of the clubhouse, especially in the summer.

Special thanks go to Ashleigh, who made us so welcome in the clubhouse on our arrival.

Not only is Ashleigh a handy golfer, playing off 10 and who got to semi finals of the National Daily Mail Competition in October, but she is a brilliant singer and entertainer, very well known in Blackpool and many Fylde Coast venues where she has been working for the last 10 years. It’s hardly surprising that Ashleigh is particularly popular entertaining at golf club events!

The impressive ’boutique’ pro shop is run by a husband and wife pro team with a shop that would serve as a clubhouse for many clubs!. Thanks to Emma for sorting everything for us despite our 1 hour delay owing to a massive traffic hold up on the M60/M61 link motorway.

All 18 holes were open on main greens which had been hand cut for the first time this year. Some of the fairways were understandably wet in places, but the greens were in great condition and displayed MacKenzie’s obvious genius. There was a great deal of course work taking place to fairway drainage and tree removal which will no doubt make the golfing experience even better for when the season starts.

The welcome and friendliness was brilliant from when we arrived to the minute we left, despite the staff having to cater for a funeral reception for over 200 people from 4pm in the main lounge

Helen Ball (Finance Officer) was so helpful in making the introductions to members and club officials and we were particularly honoured to meet David Ashcroft who with 68 years, is the  longest serving club member.

A special mention goes to Malcolm Price (past Captain and past President) and also Rab a Scotsman from Fife, both of whom made us very welcome.

Finally we loved the sign for the ladies course toilets – no ‘inconvenience’ to us!

Thank you Morecambe GC for a great day – we look forward to returning in the summer.
