Open Week – Final Day

Axe Edge Results – just 1 point in it

Cavendish Open Week takes a lot of organising by member volunteers and once again this year circa  1000 golfers competed in our wide assortment of competitions. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with many people determined to return in 2019 and some paying to secure their slots!

Cavendish Golf Club welcomes the opportunity to invite non-members to experience the special nature of Cavendish and Dr Alister MacKenzie’s genius in golf course design. Spare a thought for our valiant starter John Bentley who not only saw all teams off throughout the day, but even took pictures of all the teams – many thanks John to you and to Pat for all the support with the raffle in the clubhouse – a family affair! Thank you to all the many Cavendish volunteers who support the club so willingly.

The greens team have done an amazing job to present the course in a such great condition for Open Week, coping with the unprecendented drought and then the unexpected Sunday deluge on the first day! Thanks to the greens team and Greens Director Mike Higgins for doing such a great job.

The Axe Edge Trophy is always a full field and today 212 golfers competed in a 4BBB Stableford competition. Teams from Sheffield to Southport (with at least 4 Cavendish ‘virgins’); Wolverhampton to Wigan and even Leicester to LA (well actually San Francisco, California) took part. The competition results could not have been closer, requiring card play off rules to decide the finishing places.

The day was full of surprises and early on the course rang out with a great cheer!
It turned out to be a hole in one by Dean Dunkerley from Grange Park GC, Rotherham (pictured left)
Match & Handicap Director Colin Pritchard (pictured right) happened to meet Dean’s team as they came down to the 17th tee and Colin was on the 5th tee. When he heard about the hole in one he said he would award Dean a special prize of £20.
Well done Dean – don’t forget to apply for your Hugo Boss watch!  This was Dean’s 5th visit to Cavendish and he just loves the course – even more so, now that he has a hole in one to his credit!

Results – Just one point separates all 8 winners!

Finally a special thanks to Fairway Eatery & Bar and their staff who served drinks and food all day.

The Bar B Q on the terrace was available all day and much enjoyed by members and guests.

But the final comment must be reserved for ‘Ginge’ the three-legged club cat.

Ginge did his best to look cool and sophisticated, but couldn’t resist chasing the golf balls (3 legs or not!)

As the last groups came in Ginge attacked one of the balls landing to the back of the 18th green and owned by Claremont GC Director of Golf, Jay McDaniel.

Jay was heard to say that ‘he wished Ginge could have knocked it closer to the hole!

As our 2018 Open Week comes to a close we would like to thank our many new visitors and our many returning visitors for choosing us.

We hope you have had ‘fun’ playing our special course and that we have lived up to our claim that Cavendish provides ‘Sheer Golfing Enjoyment’.

Please come again.

A special mention should go to the greens staff. The course was presented in superb condition all week but especially good for Axe Edge.
Cheers guys for your dedication to the cause.
