Yesterday the ladies arrived for the first time this open week for our Mixed AmAm.  We seem to have spent more time talking about the weather but once again the early starters were faced with leaden skies, drizzle a noticeable breeze and temperatures somewhat lower than one would hope for at this time of year.  “I’d like to come and play it in the summer” remarked one Yorkshire lad!

Despite the conditions and with teams representing 34 different clubs it was the early pair of Jennifer Young and Danny Lever from Bolton Old Links Golf Club that set the pace; their experience of links golf no doubt helping them in blustery conditions to post a magnificent 44 points. Several of the locals, including our Lady Captain and Club Captain managed to break 40 points, but all reported leaving just too many putts out there to mount a serious challenge.

By lunchtime the top of the leaderboard hadn’t changed.  As with the first 2 days, the rain had now cleared, the temperature was on the rise but the greens were getting even trickier as the wind and sun made then ever faster. There were plenty of birdies to be had but keeping good runs going seemed to be eluding the players as front 9s of 23 and 24 were followed by back 9s of 15 and 16 respectively. “This is our 3rd year and the course gets better and better.  I don’t care how I play, I just love being here” remarked one visitor from Lingdale Golf Club.

Brother and sister Ben & Kim Bradbury from Cavendish came closest with 43 points but as the final score was entered our early leaders (who teed off at 10.10) had hung on to secure a well-deserved victory.  Well done to all who played and especially to our prize winners.
