Play got under way at 10.30 with the team from Glossop Golf Club led by John Wray – a steady start had them level par through the first 4 holes but anybody who knows Cavendish knows that that is when the course really starts!
Scoring all morning proved to be difficult despite the superb condition of both the fairways and the greens. Visitors were discovering that you get the wrong side of a hole at your peril and 3 putting was in abundance!
By early afternoon it had warmed up somewhat and the tea, coffee and cakes on the 8th tee seemed to be providing the energy for teams to attack on the back 9. In fact it was our Glossop team who came home in 44 to post the early target. Not far behind though was Mike Sherry and his merry band of Wilmslow Warriors. A flurry of pars over the closing stretch saw them take the clubhouse lead on 80 points.
But Cavendish members are renowned for timing their charge and a very consistent 42 out and 42 back had the team of Michael & Mark Oakes, Ian Middleton and Paul Crisp in pole position but with a long, nervous wait ahead. Next in were our own Alan Webster, Neil Bolton, Neil Flynn and Alister Dean taking 2nd place on the leaderboard via card play-off only to be pushed back to 3rd following a splendid finishing stretch from John Collinson and his team from Mellor.
Congratulations to our winners and to everybody who played and made it a most enjoyable event.
My thanks to Cavendish Golf Club for hosting the event and to everybody who helped in the planning and organisation. The day has raised in excess of £2,000 for which the benefitting charities are immensely grateful. Special thanks to all those who baked or provided raffle items and to all the prize sponsors. Both myself and the charities are so grateful for your generosity. Terry Hayward.
