Yesterday we reached the mid-point of our Open week with a Men’s Texas Scramble attracting a full field from 8am-4pm. With prizes available for the top 5 teams it was only going to be a closely contested event, on a course that the team from Horsley Lodge described as ‘Awesome’! The key to scoring well at Cavendish is always mastery of the greens, and with the stimpmeter giving our putting surfaces a speed of 10.6 that was certainly the case yesterday.
With the exception of the local team of Craig Smith, Ryan Harvey, Scott Harvey and Matthew Nutt who posted a creditable 54 (-14) the early scoring reflected the difficulty of the course with all teams reporting missing just far too many birdie opportunities. The weather (as it has been all week) was not helpful with a steady breeze and some annoyingly persistent showers.
So far this week the afternoons have yielded the low scores and Weds was no exception. As the weather improved, so did the scoring and it was the 2pm team of Andrew Wilson (Grange Park), Jamie Hooper & Freddy Steel (Dore & Totley) and Dave Grocutt (Hillsborough) returning a score of 52.2 that raised the bar to a new level. There was a nervous wait and several teams came close, but in the end it, was a mark that could not be beaten. You could see the disappointment etched on faces as teams returned what they thought could be winning cards only to stare in disbelief when they saw the Yorkshire boys at the top of the Leaderboard!
A lot of work goes into preparing the Club for Open Week and it was wonderful to hear so much positivity about players experience at Cavendish. “Without doubt one of the best courses I’ve played with a wonderful, friendly and professional feel to it.” Was how it was summed up by one visitor from Chester. “I look forward to my trip to Cavendish every year and this year has been magnificent” remarked another from Nottingham.
Once again, thank you to all our visitors for making it a great day and congratulations to all our prize winners. All winnings are held on account in our Proshop.
