I am honoured to be given the privilege of becoming 2019 Cavendish Golf Club Captain.

I started playing golf whilst serving in the military on a little 9 hole course called Goal Farm near Pirbright Surrey.  I soon became hooked on the game and was lucky enough to be a member at the Royal Household Golf Club at Windsor Castle; the Army Golf Club in Aldershot followed and then the Downshire in Bracknell. As good as all these courses are, it was always my intention to move back up to Buxton and join Cavendish, which I did in 2001.

I’ve maybe not have been a member as long as previous Captains, but Cavendish is a course I simply can’t stay away from and enjoy every time I tee it up. You never get bored of playing Cavendish.

Cavendish is a fantastic McKenzie design created using the natural contours of the land in the beautiful Peak District. When you reach the undulating, fast and tricky greens you start to understand why it is compared to Augusta.  The greens are the course’s defence which  test the skill and patience of golfers of all abilities.

A recent golfing feature summed up the course brilliantly:
“Its the best golf course under 6000 yards on the planet”.

All of the visitors I’ve spoken to, say what a wonderful course we have and ask what the secret is to playing those greens!? WOW!

Buxton is a beautiful old market town with lots to do and plenty of places to eat and drink, so come for the weekend and spend time visiting the club and town.

At the Golf Club Reception you’ll be greeted by the ever-smiling Rachel who will cater to all your golfing needs, whether you’re a 2 ball or a large society. After your round just retire to the bar and lounge where the staff at Cavendish Views will welcome you. One of the real joys of the clubhouse is to soak up the views of the course from the terrace and watch the sun go down on the beautiful Peak District hills while sipping your drink.

We are in the process of developing our junior academy with the help of our Professional Simon Townend and George Bloor our Club Ambassador. George is proof that Cavendish can produce great golfers. He started at Cavendish as a junior, played for Derbyshire and England and has now embarked on his professional career. Both Simon and George are keen to help develop our juniors as well as our adult members and will be running clinics throughout the year to help all levels of golfer to improve their games, whether you’re new to the game or just want to improve.

New members are always welcome and made to feel comfortable. Our weekly roll-ups are well attended with lots of banter and are a great way to get to know other members.

If you are interested in joining as a member or playing as a visitor, please contact Rachel in reception.

Finally I hope to play with as many members (new and old) throughout the year, so please don’t hesitate to add your name against mine on BRS.
