As always the Cavendish Golf Club Open week ends with the Axe Edge Trophy, a men’s 4BBB that has been keenly contested for many years.  So popular is the event that around 60% of the field sign up 12 months in advance to ensure they get their preferred tee time.

200 players were in the field and play got under way at 7.30am on a glorious sunny morning. It was the 8am Cheshire pairing of Ashley Millington and Michael Smith who were first to get a good score going, returning a creditable 40 points.  “Really great conditions out there and whilst there are some tricky pins there is definitely a score to be had” was the early commentary. With the greens running at 10’10” putting was going to be the key.

One of the pre-start favourites and previous winners, Steve Whalley & Al Dean of Cavendish teed off at 09.50 and it wasn’t long before they were into their stride. A stunning performance from 8-14, retuning 23 points in 7 holes, and a strong finish allowed them to post an 11 under par 47pts, a mark that the rest of the field could only chase.  “Steve was incredible”, said Al, “he’s an Axe Edge specialist and at times I felt like a caddy” was how he summed up their round.

For the first time this week it was the home players who were filling the top spots but nobody could better Whalley & Dean.  John Worsley (Cavendish) & Michael Taylor (Shrigley Hall) came close with 45 and a slew of teams managed 44 but as the day rolled on it was clear that the early pace-setters couldn’t be caught.  By the time the last putt was rolled in at 8.10pm, there was just 6 points between 1st and 10th and as the sun set on Axe Edge, Open Week was over.

1108 golfers representing 112 different clubs have competed over the 7 days. There have been 134 prizes, of which 90 have gone to visitors with a combined value of £8,020.  Thank you to everybody who has played and congratulations to all our prize winners.  We hope to see you next year.
