Lady Captain 2020, Fiona Wylie

Ladies Section

I consider it an honour and a privilege to be Cavendish Golf Club’s Lady Captain for 2020. I started playing golf aged 6 and joined Caldy Golf Club on the Wirral as a junior member. I have been a member at Cavendish for 10 years and during that time I have not only met some wonderful friends, but my golf has flourished. Our club is steeped in history and tradition, but we have a forward-thinking modern Ladies Section. Golf not only gives women a chance to relax and find some me-time in our hectic schedules but it’s a fabulous way to keep fit and healthy both physically and mentally. We can either play golf with the family or enjoy it as an escape! Cavendish is a beautiful golf course set on the edge of Buxton and you feel a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Our Ladies’ Section is thriving, with around 40 members of all ages and abilities. We have Medal or Stableford 18 hole club competitions every week in the summer and fun competitions in the winter. We have 9 hole competitions for our more senior ladies and ladies new-to-golf all year round.

After our round of golf, we enjoy a friendly chat over a drink or lunch and take in the stunning views of the golf course. Our cosy recently refurbished clubhouse is the perfect setting for our many social events, dinners, barbeques and entertainments. It has what’s often called the ‘best beer garden in Buxton’ and many a summer evening can be spent on the terrace with a chilled glass of wine! We welcome family members to join us at the clubhouse and there are many family orientated events throughout the year.

We run Bronze and Silver teams who compete with other Derbyshire teams on a league basis. Our members also have the opportunity to play in mixed team friendlies with other local clubs and enter knockout team competitions like the Archie Preston Trophy and Mail on Sunday. We have ladies away weekends and exchange days with other golf clubs. In addition to the more formal competitions, we also have many fun competitions such as Texas scrambles and Am-Ams. It is a wonderful way to meet new people and make new friends. There is always a vibrant social scene and lively atmosphere at the club.

Apart from golf we have a cheerful bridge group who meet twice a week and are always on the lookout for new players.

We pride ourselves on being a very sociable and welcoming club. Look out for our ‘Prosecco Putting’ events which hopefully will give you the confidence to pop in and discover what golf at Cavendish has to offer. We have many longstanding golfers who are always happy to dedicate time to welcoming new members. Juniors girls are actively encouraged and a number of our ladies started playing from a junior level. We have established links with local schools and junior sessions are run by our professional during the summer months supported by Derbyshire County Golf and our ladies section. Our 9 hole Piccolo Academy course provides an excellent introduction to the game before graduating to the full 18 holes.

This is a lovely quote from one of our newest lady members:

“The Cavendish Golf Club has a great women’s section, super friendly, they really helped me get started playing the sport. I love golf! If anyone locally is thinking of having a go, please get in touch”
