Windsor Davies Tribute

Malc and Harry 1988

Many of us will have been saddened by the recent death of comic actor Windsor Davies and will have fond memories of the hugely popular TV series ‘It Ain’t Half Hot Mum’ which ran for 56 episodes from 1974-1981.

The series plotted the comic adventures of a group of misfits who form an extremely bad concert party touring the hot and steamy jungles of Burma entertaining the troops during World War II. Windsor Davies played Battery Sergeant-Major ‘shut up’ Williams and Don Estelle played Gunner ‘Lofty’ Sugden (nearly 4′ 11″).

These two characters had a surprise number one hit record in the UK in 1975 with duet of ‘Whispering Grass’.

At a Cavendish Captain’s Farewell event in 1988, ‘plucky, diminutive’ Malcolm Burgess and ‘fearsome ex-guardsman’ Harry Carlisle, recreated the duet to the great amusement of the members of that time.

The video was taken by Pam and Derek Brindley and our own video historian John Bentley has kindly added to his You Tube Channel (MrBenjay22) so we can all share in this moment of social history for the club. Click and enjoy ….

Many thanks once again John.

Well done John for posting that video of Malcolm and Harry. Brought back lots of wonderful memories of the magic times we used to have at Cavendish.
